Labor Day (Labor Day)

Description:

Demonstration
Currently, the Day of International Workers’ Solidarity in Brazil is called “Dia do Trabalho” – “Labor Day” and is a public holiday and a day off at the same time, as in many countries of the world.

In Brazil, the first celebration was held in 1895 at the initiative of the socialist center - Centro Socialista, founded in 1889 by activists Silvério Fontes, Sóter Araújo and Carlos Escobar.

Under President Artur Bernardes, on May 1, 1925, the name of “Workers’ Day” was fixed. During this day, rallies, parades, festive performances, picnics could be held.

Gradually, the holiday began to be correlated with the protection of workers’ rights: on a normal working day, minimum wage, social benefits and guarantees.

During the reign of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945), the Ministry of Labour - o Ministério do Trabalho - was founded, which assumed responsibility for such important issues as the regulation of the working hours of women and minors, the right to leave and pension, the development of a labor code, and the May Day holiday became an official holiday.

During the military dictatorship, the demonstrations of the workers on May 1 were massive and a manifestation of discontent with the existing regime.

On May 1, 1980, 100,000 people gathered at the Vila Euclides stadium in the town of São Bernardo do Campo, expressing support for Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, then the trade union leader and now the current president of Brazil.

Today, Brazil is a country with unresolved social problems, and May 1 is still the day when trade union-organized rallies are held in selected locations.

But for most Brazilians, this day is likely another day off, during which they rest depending on their interests.

Very often Brazilians get together by companies and make churasco - fry large pieces of meat on a grille or skewers. This tradition is somewhat reminiscent of the usual for us dacha barbecue for the May holidays.

Also, Brazilians love to play sports, and on an extra weekend they are happy to run, skate, play volleyball or football (football field is an obligatory attribute of even the smallest settlement in the depths of the continent). Rest in the coastal areas - of course, on the beach.
