The castle-fortress of St. Christ of the Nativity in Belem, or Fort of the Nativity of Christ, is one of the most popular attractions of the city.
The fort is part of the Felice Lusitania architectural complex. This fortress, founded on January 12, 1616, is considered the birthplace of the city of Belem. This is where the Portuguese conquest of the Amazon began. It also served as a defense against French and Dutch invaders.
Today, there is a small but good museum dedicated primarily to the indigenous communities of Pará. From the height of the thick stone walls of the fort of the Nativity of Christ, there is an excellent view of the city and the Amazon River.
The fortress is open from Tuesday to Friday - from 10 to 18 hours, and on weekends - from 10 to 20 hours.
