Algodoal Island

Ilha do Algodoal, Para, Brazil

Description:

Algodoal is an idyllic island in the state of Para.

This island is also known as Mayandehua, which means “Mother Earth” in the Tupi language. The name "Algodoal" was given to the island because of the abundance of cotton fishermen who arrived there in the 1920s. There are several fishing villages on the island, the largest of which is Algodoal (the rest are Fortalezina, Camboinha and Mokooka).

The area of the island is 19 square kilometers. The island is striking for its beautiful scenery, as well as the fact that there are no asphalt roads or cars. Electricity at Algodoal appeared only in 2005, and water is supplied from natural wells. People living on the island are mainly engaged in fishing, agriculture and, more recently, tourism.

The journey to the island from Belem takes about five hours, so it is better to stay on this wonderful island for at least one night to enjoy its beauty, tranquility and magnificent beaches. It should also be remembered that there are no banks on Algodoal, so it is better to stock up on cash before traveling to the island.
