Fort da Barra Grande

Estrada para Sta Cruz dos Navegantes, Guaruzha, Brazil

Description:

Fort da Barra Grande is located on the southeastern tip of the island of Santo Amaro in Guarúge. The fort is also known by other names: "Fortress of Santo Amaro da Barra Grande", "Fortaleza de San Miguel" and "Fortaleza da Praia Grande".

This is an ancient structure, built in the late 16th century to strengthen the coast, which at that time encroached on the British, as well as to protect against pirates. The fortress acquired its features already in the 18th century, when an artillery garrison was located here. The last time local tools were used in the late 19th century. In the 20th century, the military left the fortress and it and the surrounding area were recognized as a military historical monument. It is interesting that throughout its existence the fortress served as a prison for political prisoners.

The fortress is beautifully inscribed in the local landscape - the steps lead from the bottom to the very top. On the lower step are towers and defensive towers, on the upper - the so-called headquarters and chapel.
