The Church of St. George in Illeus (Igreja Matriz de Sã o Jorge dos Ilh us) was opened in 1556 and today is a historical monument of the city. This is the most prominent building in the center of Illeus, its architecture impresses with its simplicity and perfection. The beautiful and majestic Catholic church of the 16th and 17th centuries harmoniously blended into the local picturesque landscape.
The church is located next to the restaurant Ves vio, in the historic center of the city, and is ideal for meditation and prayer. The magnificent interior of the temple is decorated with the image of St. George and other saints. There is also a huge panel that tells about Illeus, and the Museum of Sacred Art, founded in 1970.
