Av. Soares Lopes, 1473-1527, Ilh us - BA, 45653-005, Brazil

Description:

St. Sebastian's Cathedral is a majestic structure in Illeus.

The cathedral was built on the site of St. Sebastian's Chapel, which was ordered demolished in 1927. There have been many discussions about the project and the location of the new cathedral. In seeking a solution, Mayor Eucinio Lavigne consulted with the director of the School of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro, Archimedes Memoria. The cathedral was built in an eclectic style by architect Solomon Silveira. It took more than 30 years to build.

St. Sebastian’s Cathedral was opened in 1967.

The height of the cathedral together with the main dome is 48 meters. The facade of the building is decorated with stained glass windows, arches, columns and the smallest details in the neoclassical style.

The cathedral carries a huge cultural value and is one of the main attractions of the municipality.
