Church of San Pellegrino
Cassias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Description:
The Church of San Pellegrino is one of the oldest buildings in Cassias do Sul. The history of the temple is connected with the beginning of Italian immigration and the foundation of the city.
Initially, a chapel was built on this site in 1893 in honor of St. Raphael. Later, the building of the temple expanded, and in 1953 the final construction of the current church was completed. The author of the architectural project was Vitorino Zani.
The church is widely known for its rich interior decoration. The walls and roof of the temple are decorated with frescoes by the famous artist Aldo Locatelli, who began painting the temple in 1951 and finished it only in 1960. A real masterpiece are the temple doors, made by Augusto Murero and sculptor Belluno in bronze in Italy and decorated with scenes of immigration. The weight of the doors is about 7 tons.
