Maringá

The Cathedral of the Mother of God

Av. Tiradentes, 611-629 - Zona 50 - Zona Central, Maringa, Brazil

Description:

The Cathedral in Maringa, dedicated to Our Lady, is the least like the Catholic Cathedral it is, so extraordinary and bizarre is its architecture. The light stone building, built from 1959 to 1972, is considered the tallest temple building in Latin America. It looks very modern, dynamic, if not bold. A powerful cone, aimed at the sky, as if breaking out of thorns, being a peculiar and very expressive symbol of the Catholic faith. There is something cosmic in this building. And not by chance - inspired by architect Jose Augusto Bellucci Soviet space satellites!

The cathedral is located in a picturesque corner of the city, on the one hand it is bordered by small ponds with fountains and special illumination - in the evening hours this place looks enchanting.

The interior of the cathedral, which can accommodate more than 4.5 thousand people, is not very luxurious. But it's not necessary. Stained glass windows with abstract drawings, a seven-meter wooden crucifix and several paintings successfully create a sacred atmosphere of the temple in an unusual room.
