Fort Boa Viagem
Niter & oacute i - RJ, 24210-346, Brazil
Description:
Fort Boa Viagem is located on the island of the same name, on a rock, just below the Church of Our Lady Boa Viagem. Today you can see only the ruins of fortifications built in the 17th century under the name Forte da Barra.
Historians are divided on the date of construction of the temple and the fortification. Some believe that the island's architectural heritage, including the chapel and fortress, dates back to 1663. Others believe that the year of foundation of the Fort is 1695. It is also claimed that the fortress was built before 1710.
Like all fortifications erected in Niteroi at the time, Fort Boa Viagem served to monitor and protect the bay. From 1810 until 1876, the Marine School was located here. It has been a military observation post since 1885.
In 1937, the ruins of the fort were recognized as a historical monument and, together with the church and the entire island, are under state protection.
