Rio favelas: it's scary to go - I don't want to leave. Rosinha or Santa Marta to choose from

The favelas, poor slum areas, are the most contrasting of Rio de Janeiro and the most controversial... like the heart of a Latin American beauty.
Here, the fears of tourists and real life collide head-on. It’s “the most dangerous place” for rich Brazilians, and the safest place for locals: children go out late, and you can forget your phone in a cafe and no one will steal it.

Here, there are things that usually do not intersect: sellers of the forbidden with weapons and charitable projects, frightening with their cramped streets and sincere smiles of residents, everyday simplicity and views for which they come to Rio.

A real Brazil, a city within a city with its own rules, logic and heroes. He’ll scare you a little, give you an adrenaline rush... and then fall in love with himself forever.

I’m not a classic guide, I’m a documentary director, so every tour of the favela turns into a live script where you’re not a spectator, but a participant.

Rocinha - the largest favela of Brazil, a real metropolis inside the city
Santa Marta – compact, more “cinematic”, with a funicular and the very platform where Michael Jackson shot his video

Climb up.
in Rocinje - on a motorcycle taxi or a local minibus (quickly, noisy, with a breeze) in Santa Marta - on an unassuming and funny funicular for the locals.

Upstairs a species cafe or observation deck with panoramas of the ocean and beaches: “the same Rio with postcards”.

Descent down - on foot through a maze of narrow streets and stairs:

• We go to the homes of the locals and listen to their stories firsthand.
• See how life works: shops, bars, life, infrastructure
• Visit local bars/coffees
• We will see the coaching of the local martial dance school - capoeira
• If you wish, play football with the locals in an authentic box.
