Guanabara Bay
Description:
Thanks to the Bay of Guanabara Rio de Janeiro got its name. It was in January 1502, when a detachment of Portuguese colonizers suddenly came to the bay. The commander-in-chief mistaken the bay for a river, and called it the "River of January" - which in Portuguese sounded like Rio de Janeiro. And although after the settlement of geographical disputes, the River of January was renamed Guanabara Bay - the name of the city founded here remains unchanged to this day.
Guanabara Bay takes the honorable first place in the world in terms of water volume. Inside the bay are a number of small islands. Thanks to the picturesque views, the bay is filled with many cruise ships.
