San Sebastian Cathedral in Rio de Janeiro

Av. Repú blica do Chile - Centro, Rio de Janeiro, 20031-170, Brazil

Description:

The Cathedral of San Sebastian in Rio de Janeiro is the most original and at the same time strange temple located in the city center. The cathedral building is more like a truncated 75-meter cone, extending out of the ground, and the diameter at its base is 95 meters.

Such an interesting temple was built in 1979. It's been under construction for 15 years. According to the architect, the church was supposed to resemble a Mayan pyramid, but the building came out more direct and individual. Despite everything, the local archbishop was quite approving of the project.

The interior of the cathedral is truly impressive - what is only worth seeing the most beautiful stained glass windows, soaring at a 64-meter height. The interior is complemented by the image of Christ suspended on steel cables, and the crypt houses the Museum of Fine Arts.
