Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro
Jardim Botâ nico, Rio de Janeiro - RJ Brazil
Description:
Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful places in Rio de Janeiro. The garden is located in the southern part of Rio and covers about several hundred hectares.
The famous park area was laid out in 1808 by the decree of Prince João, representing the Royal family of Portugal. Amazing plants from all over the world were brought to the territory, which had to adapt to the new land and continue to grow in natural conditions. From the very beginning of the opening of the garden, it was used for walks only by royals and their entourage. For ordinary people, the doors of the Botanical Garden were opened by order of Don Pedro I in 1822.
The modern Botanical Garden features more than 7 thousand plants from different parts of Brazil and around the world. The main attractions of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro are the “Japanese Garden”, “Orchidarium”, lakes, ponds, fountains, palm alley and the Pau Brasil tree – a symbol of the country.
There is also a research institute on the site, which takes into account data on plants growing in the garden. Its library has more than 32,000 publications.
