Sao Januario opened in April 1927, and since then its popularity has only grown. Originally
The stadium accommodated 15,000 fans, but later, after reconstruction, this figure increased to 25,000. Until the forties of the twentieth century, Sao Januario was the largest stadium in the country.
Sao Januario is also an important historical monument. From his rostrum, Brazil's presidents have repeatedly delivered speeches addressing their people. And at the 2016 Olympics, the stadium will become a venue for rugby competitions - this sport will be included in the Olympic program for the first time, and Sao Januario was chosen for this memorable debut.
