The Old Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro

R. do Carmo, 46 - Centro, Rio de Janeiro, 20011-020, Brazil

Description:

The Old Cathedral is a temple dedicated to Our Lady and located on Mount Caramel. From 1808 to 1976 it served as a cathedral. In the XIX century, the temple was also used as the imperial chapel of the royal family. Located in the center of Rio de Janeiro, this building is one of the most important historical buildings in the city. The walls and ceiling of the chapel are decorated with a decorative pattern of Rococo style. All the decoration was done after 1785, in one of the best Rococo wood workshops in the city.

The upper walls of the temple have a number of balconies and oval paintings by the artist Chaos Leandro de Carvalho. The cathedral was a silent witness to some of the most important events, such as the funeral rites following the death of Queen Mary on March 1, 1916. And one of the important events – the coronation of Emperor Pedro I – also took place in the Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro in 1822.
