Galean Airport

Description:

Galeán Airport is considered the main airport of Rio de Janeiro and is located 20 kilometers from the city center. It bears the name of the popular musician António Karlos Jobin. The name of the airport literally translates as “Galeana Beach”.

The history of the airport dates back to 1923: near the beach of Galean, on the island of Governardor was located a school of naval aviation. In 1941, it was converted into a US Air Force base. In 1952, the first passenger terminal was opened at the air base. Since 1977, Galeán Airport has received all major international flights in Brazil.

In 2009, a plan was adopted to modernize Galeán Airport for the upcoming World Cup to be held in 2014 and for a worthy host for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Brazil.
