São Luís

St. John's Church

Rua da Paz com a Rua Sao Joao Centro, Sao Luis, Brazil

Description:

The Sao Joao Church was built in downtown San Luis in 1665 and is an example of neoclassical architecture.

Since the time of construction, the church has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, the last overhaul of the building was carried out in 1934.

In the front of the church are the remains of the site, which in former times functioned a small fountain. The decoration of the church itself is not very luxurious, for example, the altar of the church is almost devoid of jewelry.

Above the entrance to the church can be seen the inscription "1665 - Sancti Joannis Baptista ECCLESIA", present in the original design. On the right and left side of the main entrance there are two towers, one of which is a bell, and on the facade of the second there is a functional hole for the clock.
