Episcopal
Description:
The Episcopal Palace of San Luis is a neoclassical building with a rich past located in Piazza Pedro II, right in the center of the city, next to the Cathedral of Our Lady. The palace of the XVII century built is the most important monument located in the historical center of the city, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Initially, the building of the Society of Jesus was built on the site of the palace - in 1627. It was home to a Jesuit school and church, influenced by two significant figures, the priests Antonio Vieira and João Felipe Davenport.
The history of the Jesuits was cut short in 1759 when they were expelled from colonial Brazil.
The church and the school were transformed into a palace of bishops. In the middle of the XIX century, the palace fell into decline, so it underwent a number of reconstructions, as a result of which it acquired the appearance of a neoclassical building.
