Desert with lagoons - Lensois Maranensis

Maranjan, Brazil

Description:

One of the most unusual deserts in the world is Lençois Maranensis, a rare geographical anomaly and at the same time a national park in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. It deserves a separate presentation, if only because it is a water desert. The area, covering approximately 1,000 square kilometers, consists of white silky sands, on which endless oases of turquoise lakes are evenly located. This is one of the most amazing and unique places in the world.

At first glance, Lençois Maranensis Park looks like a typical desert. However, during the rainy season, water accumulates in valleys and dunes, forming blue and green lagoons. This desert is also amazing because it is a habitat for many fish. In the dry season, the lagoons practically dry out, but then birds bring fish eggs from the sea.

The variety of flora of the park is simply amazing - there are mangrove trees, many species of palm trees and shrubs.

The best time to visit this park is from May to September, when it is sunny enough and the lagoons are still full.
