About the company:
The Museum of Sacred Art (MAS) was founded in the late 19th century in order to preserve the sacred values of Maranyan and to familiarize the public with the history of the state church. In 1992, the Maranhaan state government purchased a building belonging to the San Luis diocese to house the MAS. The museum was opened by the Association of Museums and the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce.
The MAS collection, partly owned by the archbishop of the municipality, consists of works of the 18th and 19th centuries, made in the styles of mareirista, rococo and classicism. Here are images of saints, including Roca saints, which are traditionally used in the procession of Holy Week. In addition, the museum displays a collection of neoclassical jewelry, sacred objects used in the liturgical ceremonies of the Church of San Luis: bowls, a silver cross with precious stones from Portugal, lanterns, rare vases, lampads, solemn vestments of bishops and others.
