Church of Our Lady Guia

Lucena, João Pesoa, State of Paraiba, Brazil

Description:

The Church of Our Lady of Guia is one of the most famous churches among Brazilian colonial architecture. It is included in the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of the State of Paraiba. There is a church on top of a rock, which opens an unforgettable panorama. Its construction began at the beginning of the XVI century. The bulk of the work fell on the Carmelite brothers, who belonged to the religious order of Our Lady on Mount Carmel.

The church was built in Baroque style. On the facade of the building, built of limestone, extravagant drawings of exotic fruits are painted. Despite the passage of many centuries, the church is very well preserved. It houses one of the largest altars in Brazil, which was also made of limestone. The church is still open and its doors are always open to tourists.
