Church of Nos Signora de Carmo
Praca Dom Adauto, Joao Pessoa, State of Paraiba
Description:
The Church of Nossa Signora de Carmo, or Carmelite Church of the Virgin, is an ancient Baroque church built in the heart of João Pesoa in the early seventeenth century.
The church was built more than three centuries ago by the talented master Antonio Franšiško Lishboa, known by the nickname Alejjadinho, which means “little freak”. The Church of Our Lady in Juan Pesoa is one of the most outstanding monuments of this famous architect, and one of the most famous cathedrals in Brazil, built in the Baroque style. The magnificent courtyard of the cathedral, decorated in Moorish style, recalls the medieval architecture of the Iberian Peninsula. The stairs of the cathedral are decorated with marble lions, the strict facade of the church is complemented by a bizarre bell tower with a baroque top.
Interesting is the interior of the church, made mainly of wood. Unfortunately, most of the altar could not be restored, as it was eaten by termites. Today, work continues on the reconstruction and preservation of decorative arches, furniture and other interior details. The temple has preserved the original fresco painting dating back to the middle of the XVII century.
