The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Regina Mundi Cathedral, Bujumbura, Burundi
Description:
The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded in 1959, is a landmark of Burundi. In 1964 it was transformed into the Cathedral of the diocese of Bujumbura. This is the main Catholic church of the city.
It is located in a large but fairly simple concrete building in the heart of the city. Around the perimeter of the building there are high arched windows decorated with bright stained glass drawings depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary. On the upper level of the high square tower there is a bell tower consisting of 10 bells of bizarre shape. The simple interior of the church hall consists of a tall wooden pulpit decorated with modest carved patterns, and chairs for believers.
Liturgies and church rites are held in the temple accompanied by simple songs of worship, sung from the heart. The cathedral is open to visitors and is a favorite tourist attraction.
