The Augustinian Monastery

Augustini nsk opatstv 1/3 Brno, Czech Republic

Description:

The world glory of the Augustinian monastery, located in Brno, was not brought by the Augustinians themselves, who were forced to move here from the monastery at the Church of St. Tomas. This place is known all over the world thanks to Abbot I.G. Mendel.

It was in the Augustinian monastery that he formed the famous theory of heredity. More recently, the efforts of Czech diplomats managed to return to the monastery the fundamental work of Mendel – the 1865 manuscript “Experience on plant hybrids”. The Augustinian Order, as well as German and Austrian authorities, fought for this work for many years. Today the manuscript is presented in the museum of the Augustinian monastery.

It should be noted that the appearance of the monastery has undergone many changes since the initial construction. The construction of the once Gothic appearance took on Baroque features, as did the temple of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary, which entered the abbey complex.
