Capuchin Square
capuchin Square, Brno, Czech Republic
Description:
Capuchin Square in Brno today acts as a favorite meeting place where friends, travelers and residents can relax from the hustle and bustle. However, the square keeps not only the memories of pleasant encounters, but also the fierce struggle of the orders for religious influence.
Capuchins, which appeared in Brno in the early seventeenth century, led a modest lifestyle. However, the decoration of the Church of the Recovery of the Holy Cross, which is the main attraction of the square, says the opposite. Grandiose baroque sculptures, rich interior decoration, amazing beauty of paintings made by famous artists, speak of the power of the order.
The monastery building houses the bodies of monks and the aristocracy of Brno, who made substantial material contributions to help the order. For example, in the tomb lies the famous commander of the Austrian army – the Croatian baron Franz von Trenka, who bequeathed to the Order of the Capuchins a considerable part of his fortune.
