Freedom Square

freedom Square, Brno, Czech Republic

Description:

Freedom Square, formed by the intersection of three trade routes, fully justifies the name given to it. Simplicity and breadth of the square, non-standard triangular shape, architectural monuments of amazing beauty – it is not easy to convey the feeling of space and the clear spirit of independence and spontaneity that dominate here.

In the center of the square is a plague column, made in the Baroque style. The sculpture of the Virgin Mary with a baby and figures of saints protect the city from troubles, reminding of getting rid of the plague epidemic, which claimed many lives.

Archaeological excavations of the beginning of the XXI century revealed numerous underground labyrinths and passages hidden under Liberty Square. It is believed that they were designed during the construction of the church of St. Mikulas, which was located on the square until the middle of the XX century.
