Chescalypse
Czech Republic, Liberec Region, Cesca Lipa
Description:
The Cescalyp Monastery is located in the city of Cesca Lipa, Liberec region of the Czech Republic. The monastery was founded in 1624. It housed a school, which at that time was the only educational institution in the city. Two Augustinian monks from the monastery of St. Thomas were invited as the first teachers. The monastery owned a rather extensive library containing manuscripts and printed works on religious and natural science topics. 7
In 1707, the Church of All Saints in the Baroque style was built on the territory of the monastery.
In 1882, the school moved to a new, purpose-built building. The empty premises of the monastery were rented out as shops, pastry shops and offices. In 1950, the monastery was abolished, and a boarding school was opened in its buildings. At various times, museum archives and the House of Pioneers were housed here.
Large-scale reconstruction of the museum premises of the former monastery was carried out first in 1963-1968, and later in 1986-1990. Currently, the Museum of Natural History is located here, and the main building of the monastery is listed in the national register of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic.
