Church of the Holy Mountain

Gorazdovo ná mě stí 1125/14, Olomouc

Description:

The Church of St. Gorazd is an Orthodox church on Horazdova Square, in the city of Olomouc. It was built in 1939 in the best traditions of Byzantine architecture of the Russian type, designed by architect Vsevolod Kolomatsky. The church building has symmetrical shapes, on its top there is an octagonal tower with a gilded “onion” dome with a cross.

The church is named after Gorazd (Matej Pavlik), who in the first half of the XX century was engaged in the promotion and defense of the Orthodox faith in the Czech Republic. Thanks to him, 14 temples were built. To save the churches and parishioners, Horazd wrote letters to the government of fascist Germany, for which he was arrested and shot. From 1942 to 1945 the church was closed and used as a warehouse. At the end of the last century, the building underwent repairs, after which the temple appeared in its former glory and opened the doors for Orthodox parishioners.
