Fountain Arion
Upper square of the city, southwest side of the town hall
Description:
The Arion Fountain appeared in Olomouc in 2002. Its authors were the famous sculptor and native of Olomouc Ivan Timer and the Italian architect Angella Chiantelli. The fountain is part of an ensemble of six baroque fountains created on ancient motifs.
The fountain itself consists of an oval pool and a whole complex of bronze figures located in it. This is a turtle with an obelisk on the shell, Arion standing with a dolphin, and another turtle, riding on which tourists like to be photographed.
Arion himself was a Greek poet and singer, and a famous legend is associated with his name. It narrates how Arion on a ship returned home from Italy with rich treasures earned by his talents. The comrades envied the poet and decided to deal with him. Without hesitation, they threw him overboard, right into the sea. But Arion did not drown - he was saved by a dolphin, which was attracted by the beautiful singing of the young man. It is with this dolphin that Arion is captured in the bronze of the Czech fountain.
Today, the Arion Fountain is a favorite holiday destination for citizens and tourists. In summer, the fountain is officially allowed to cool off from the heat.
