Fountain of Heracles
Description:
The second oldest Baroque fountain in the city. It was created in 1688 by sculptor Michael Mandik and stonemason Václav Schüller.
The fountain is a reservoir in the form of a flower with a figure installed in the middle of the hero of ancient myths Hercules, fighting with the Lernean hydra. He is dressed in the skin of a lion, and in his right hand holds a club, which protects the eagle sitting on his left hand. This eagle is the symbol of Olomouc. Hydra lies at the feet of Hercules, and all seven of her heads are pointed upwards. From the open mouths flow jets of water.
It is interesting that at first Hercules was not a club, but a sword. And the fountain itself was located in another place - where the column of the Most Holy Trinity now stands. It was moved to its present location only in 1716.
