Town Hall

Horn mě st

Description:

The architectural dominant of the Upper Olomouc Square. Made in the Gothic-Renaissance style with Baroque elements. Now in the town hall there is a meeting room of the city administration, the Olomouc wedding hall, an art gallery and a cafe restaurant.

The first town hall on this place appeared at the end of the XIV century and was wooden. After the fire destroyed it, it was decided to build a stone building. The new town hall was built in 23 years, by 1443. Subsequently, as it usually happened with medieval architectural monuments, it was repeatedly rebuilt and modified. So, much later to the town hall was added the third floor, a large Gothic hall, the chapel of St. Jerome, decorated with a Gothic bay window - a glazed ledge in the wall of the building.

The town hall consists of four wings forming a small courtyard. The most notable elements of the building are the 75-meter tower and the astronomical clock. This watch was once similar to the famous Prague Orloj, but it was destroyed in May 1945. The clock was restored by 1955 in the style of socialist realism, as it has survived to this day.
