Black Lake
Zelezna Ruda 128, Zelezna Ruda, Czech Republic
Description:
Black Lake, located six kilometers from the town of Zhelezna Ore in the Pilsen region, is considered one of the largest and deepest lakes of natural origin in the Czech Republic. The triangular reservoir has remained here since the passage of the last glacier. The shores of the lake, overgrown with coniferous forest, are that corner of wildlife, which is so lacking in the bustling city.
An interesting fact is that the watershed passes almost in the middle of the lake, that is, the lake enters the Elbe basin, which flows into the North Sea and to the Danube basin, carrying its waters to the Black Sea. Here, in 1929-1930, the oldest pumped storage power plant in the Czech Republic was built. During hours of excess electricity, pumps pump water from the lake under the mountain into Black Lake. When there is not enough electricity, the water drains down, generating electricity.
In the vicinity of the lake, bicycle and hiking routes are laid for lovers of active recreation.
