Lake Odlezel

Czech Republic, Pilsen Region

Description:

Lake Odlezel is located in the western part of the Czech Republic, on the territory of the Plzen region. The elongated lake was formed in May 1872 as a result of a large landslide and is the youngest lake in the Czech Republic. The occurrence of the landslide was triggered by flooding, which accelerated the slope shift, while mining sandstone in a nearby quarry.

The total area of the lake stretched by half a kilometer in length is 5.5 hectares. Over the following decades, the lake gradually clogged and without human intervention could simply disappear.

Today, the lake and its surroundings are a protected natural area. Despite its recent origin, a unique landscape has formed around the lake. The shores of the lake are covered with forest, forming a unique picture of the harmony of water and coastal trees.
