Pilsen Square

N mě st Republiky, 301 00 Plzeň, Czech Republic

Description:

Construction of St. Paul's. Bartholomew dates from the XIII – XVI centuries. This cathedral has the highest tower spire in the Czech Republic. On the north side of the square is the Town Hall. This building, acquired in 1496 by the residents of the city and soon turned into the Town Hall, was significantly damaged by fire in the early XVI century. After that, the building was reconstructed into a beautiful palace building in the Renaissance style, and in 1907-1912 the town hall was restored using a new finish in the technique of sgraffito. To the left of the Town Hall is the House of Emperor Rudolf II. This is a two-story building in Renaissance style. The Emperor’s House is connected to the Town Hall by an internal door. In the north-western part of the square is the Plague Column of St. Mary. The column was commissioned by residents of the city in gratitude for the fact that in 1980 the city was saved from the plague epidemic.
