Blatna Castle
Czech Republic, 388 01 Blatna, Na Prikopech 320
Description:
Blatna Castle is located in the town of the same name 95 kilometers south of Prague. It is also called the Water Castle, because the castle building is surrounded by a moat so large that the latter resembles a lake. This is due to the fact that during the construction of the castle were combined several nearby ponds, and the building itself was built on a site of rocks, forming a kind of island.
This castle of the XIII century, during its existence, was repeatedly rebuilt and changed its appearance. A special role in his fate was played by representatives of the Gildbrandt family, who still own the castle.
The picturesque bridge connects the entrance to the castle with a magnificent park in the English style. The castle is open for visits and excursions.
During the CSSR, the Hildbrandts were forced to leave their homeland and temporarily settle in Ethiopia, where they were given refuge by Emperor Haile Selassie, a friend of this noble family. From a remote African country, the family brought numerous exhibits that now make up a separate Ethiopian collection. In the architecture of the castle stands the only tower, the interiors of which are decorated with medieval frescoes.
