Schwig Castle
Czech Republic, 340 12 Svihov, Zizkova 1
Description:
Schwigov Castle is located in the Czech town of the same name, located near the city of Pilsen. It was erected at the end of the XV century, according to the project of the famous architect Benedict Reith. This is one of the most powerful and impregnable fortifications located on the territory of the Czech Republic.
The castle was built on an artificial island, and the territory of the castle consisted of a rectangular courtyard around which two palaces were built. In the east, the courtyard was closed by the walls of a bastion of fortifications, with a chapel on the western tower. The whole area, like a snake, was surrounded by a moat around the walls with four corner towers and bastions (white, green, gold, red).
To date, only the western part has survived, but even this is enough to give us an idea of the size of the building.
The creation of an impregnable fortress is associated with the name of Puta Schwigowski from Ryzmberg. Due to the financial difficulties of the owner, construction was delayed for many years. The castle was completed in 1530 by the sons of Puta, but soon they had to sell it. After that, the castle changed hands until it was bought by the influential Czech family Cherninov, who owned the castle until 1945.
Stage performances, exhibitions, concerts of medieval music and knightly tournaments are constantly held here. Unfortunately, only a part of the fortress wall has survived to this day, but it also gives the impression of an impregnable and majestic fortress. Tourist routes are organized for visitors in the castle. Here you can get acquainted with the history of the castle, take a tour of its halls and corridors, visit various thematic expositions.
