Description:
Schwigov Castle is located on a hill in the valley of the Uglavy River, near the city of Pilsen, and is a massive stone fortress in the late Gothic style. The castle was built in the XIV century by the project of the famous architect Benedict Reith and was considered one of the best fortresses of its time. In 1655, the fortress was blacklisted, and on the orders of Emperor Ferdinand III was to be destroyed, so as not to become support for the enemy in the event of war.
They tried to postpone the demolition of the castle, but they began to destroy the outer wall of the fortress. Then the order was overturned. The fortress was in a dilapidated state, it was unfit for life, and it began to be used for economic needs.
In the XX century restoration work began. In 1973, the fortress became a film set for the famous fairy tale “Three Nuts for Cinderella”. Schwigov Castle is open to tourists.
