Sazawa monastery

Zamecka 72, 285 06 Sazava, Czech Republic

Description:

The Sazava Monastery, located in the Czech city of Sazava, was founded by Prince Oldřich of the Czech Republic in 1032 after the hermit monk Procopius gave him a drink of water, which turned into wine in his cup. This event aroused in him a thirst for charity and inspired the construction of a beautiful spiritual monastery, made in the style of classical neo-Renaissance.

Choosing where to stay, the monk came across a cave in the forest in which the devils lived. The demons did not want to give Procopius their dwelling, but his faith in God was so strong that the devils, not only gave him the abode, but also began to help plow the land harnessed in the plow. Over time, this initially free community, in which many hermits like Procopius gathered, under his leadership received a firm monastic charter. Compared to other monasteries of the early Middle Ages, the significance of the monastery was that its brethren preserved the Slavic language and alphabet in liturgical rites and in writing, which served to strengthen Christian society.

The monastery is worth a visit if you are going to the central part of the Czech Republic. Visiting this place will leave unforgettable memories. The amazing architectural form of the building, made in the Gothic style, will not leave anyone indifferent. Currently, the Sazava Monastery-Castle is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic, it houses the exposition “Middle Age Sazava” and an exhibition of Sazava glass.
