Prague’s Jewish Quarter – Josefov

Description:

The history of Prague Jews is closely intertwined with the history of the city. The Prague Ghetto, one of the oldest in Europe, began to emerge with the arrival of the first Jews in the 10th century.

In a small area from the Old Town Square to the Vltava River crowded houses, shops and synagogues. In one of them, Rabbi Loew created his Golem, a clay man called upon to help the residents of the quarter in their work and daily affairs. What happened, you will learn during the tour.

You can also see the town hall with a clock going in the opposite direction, the ancient Jewish cemetery, where, due to lack of space, tombstones are bridged over each other, six magnificent synagogues of the quarter, including the oldest in Eastern Europe - Staronovaya. We will walk along Paris street, the most fashionable street in Prague, which appeared only in the 19th century and is now the center of the quarter. We will see the monument to Franz Kafka and a tiny part of the surviving old houses of Prague Jews.
