Kutna Hora
Description:
A medieval city 70 km from Prague. Included in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage.
Kutna Hora is known in history as both a royal city and a mining town.
In the early Middle Ages, there was a monastery where monks were engaged in brewing, agriculture and winemaking. Until a silver deposit was found here, which immediately changed the situation. At first, silver was mined on the territory of the monastery, but the news of the mining flew around the kingdom so quickly that it gave rise to a real silver fever.
Dig everywhere and messy. Around the developments spontaneously appeared buildings - barracks for miners, brewery, baths. Miners who worked in inhuman conditions, and spent in the mines, in pitch darkness and dampness for several days, lived to a maximum of 30 years, on days when they did not work, sought solace in beer and wine, after which they walked around the city and rambled. However, by decrees of the king, Kutna Mountain was declared a royal city, and then began to restore order. They began to build churches and stone buildings, a mint opened in Kutnaya Gora, and it became the only one, since all other courtyards of the kingdom were closed by royal decree. Coiners from Italy were invited, who were called upon to establish high-quality minting of the “Prague penny”.
Despite the constant noise, King Wenceslas IV ordered to build a residence right on the territory of the mint. The ringing of the coins was pleasant to him, and there was a source that financed his partying and entertainment. The city was very rich, built up, and for a long time tried to match Prague, which you will notice during the tour. But that was all a long time ago... The last mine was closed in the 90s of the XX century. Since the historical center has been preserved in the original since the Middle Ages, the city is listed as a UNESCO cultural heritage.
Another attraction that brought worldwide fame Kutnaya Gore is Kostnitsa (Kostehranilica), which is located on the outskirts of the city, in the chapel of All Saints. The interior of the chapel is made of human bones and skulls. The history of Kostnitsa is interesting, but you will learn about this during a tour of Kutnaya Gora.
