Konopište Castle

Description:

Romantic fortress Konopište is one of the most visited sights of the Czech Republic.

Konopishte was originally a medieval fortress with seven towers, two lifting bridges and powerful fortress walls. For many centuries, Konopište Castle was owned by several famous and noble European families. The fortress has repeatedly changed its appearance. The castle performed different functions: it was both a defensive structure and a cozy home residence.

The most famous owner of Konopište was Franz Ferdinand d’Este, Eggduke and heir to the Austrian throne. His assassination in Sarajevo triggered World War I.

Few people know that the richest collection of military and hunting weapons in the Czech Republic (and the third in Europe!) is kept in the medieval castle of Konopište. We will get acquainted not only with the collection of unique weapons of the XVI-XVIII centuries, but also with the life tragedy of the last owner. During the tour of the castle, we will have the opportunity to see the hunting corridor with trophies, the arsenal, the library, the luxurious rooms of the Archduke and his family. The interior impresses with paintings, sculptures, outlandish objects and souvenirs of the Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance era. After visiting the castle, we will walk in an unusually picturesque castle park, where roses bloom and peacocks walk.

If desired, after the tour, we can dine in the best hunting restaurant in the Czech Republic, or go to tasting fresh, unfiltered beer, at the Kozel plant, in the village of Velke Popovice.
