Czech Sternberg Castle

Description:

The Sternberg family itself has deep roots and is considered one of the oldest noble families in the Czech Republic. The influence of the Sternbergs on state policy has always been very great. After the Hussite Wars, for example, when the country was rising from the ruins of war, for example, the diplomat Zdenek Konopištky of Sternberg was the head of a large delegation sent to the French court asking for the hand of a princess for the Czech King Ladislav Pogrobka. He, in consequence, supported another king in his struggle for the throne - Jiri of Podebrad. Despite all the trips and missions, the castle Český Sternberg has always remained a family residence.

The life of the Sternberg family, despite its titles and wealth, was not easy. During World War II, they fell out of favor with the Nazis, who first described the entire inventory, and then evicted the family from there, taking away the Czech Sternberg. The then owner, George Sternberg, even had to work on the construction of the D1 Autobahn, started on Hitler’s idea.

The end of the war brought the Sternbergs some relief. Just 3 after it ended, in 1948, the property was confiscated again, this time by the new communist regime. Most of the Schernbergs emigrated to Austria. Remaining in the Czech Republic, Count Jiří was able to stay in the castle of Czech Sternberg, working as a castellan and conducting excursions in his former estate, and his wife sold tickets at the box office of the castle. Thanks to this, family values and objects of the Sterberg dynasty have been preserved to this day.
