Friedlant Castle
Description:
Friedlant Castle is located on the border of three countries of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. The expression “vriderland” is translated from German as “keep the land”.
During its existence, the castle has indeed endured many battles and sieges. Only in the 15th century it was attacked four times by the Hussites, in 1427, 1428, 1430 and 1432. But, despite its rich past, thanks to the efforts of the owners of the castle Friedlant managed to preserve its truly unique architecture. The castle complex now includes both a 13th-century Gothic structure on top of a basalt cliff and a later Renaissance palace.
The tour in the castle lasts about two hours. Its exposition is rich in interiors and reflects not only the features of medieval life, but also the life of the aristocracy of the 18th and 19th centuries. The male and female floors of the palace differ in style and decoration, you can plunge into the life of the Czech noble family and visit more than 50 rooms.
Friedland opened its doors to visitors in 1801 and is the second oldest castle museum in Europe, after Versailles.
Friedland Castle is associated with such famous figures of Czech history as Duke Albrecht von Waldstein and Count Matthias Gallas.
Due to its location in the north of the Czech Republic, Friedland Castle may not be the only point on your route. A visit to the castle can be combined with an excursion to the city of the Czech grenade Turnov, climbing the cable car to the unique observation deck of Mount Jested and a sightseeing walk around the city of Liberec.
