St. John's. Nicholas in the Small Country
Malostransk ná mě stí, 118 00 Praha 1 - Malá Strana, Czech Republic
Description:
The beginning of the construction of the grandiose cathedral takes us back to 1283, where at that time the parish church of St. Nicholas stood on the site of the current church. The change of power in the XVIII century marked the beginning of the Baroque era for the architecture of the Small Country, so the church decided to rebuild.
The project belongs to Krzysztof Dentzenhofer, but his son had to finish it, as well as design a unique vault and dome, which later became one of the main landmarks for residents and guests of Prague. In 1752, the building was crowned with a bell tower 80 meters high, which became an integral symbol of Prague and the most notable silhouette of the Small Country.
Inside, the cathedral is decorated with frescoes, precious materials, gilding and marble. The vaults of the main nave are covered with a fresco of 1500 square meters. It is one of the largest in Europe and depicts scenes from the life of St. Nicholas.
Unusually, concerts are regularly organized in the cathedral. The fact is that there is an organ on which Mozart played during his stay in Prague.
