St. Nicholas Church in the Old Place
Description:
One of the main attractions of Prague is the Church of St. Nicholas, its second name is the Church of St. Mikulash. It was built on the site of one of the oldest religious buildings in the city, the memories of which date back to the 13th century. The temple was repeatedly rebuilt, acquiring new exquisite details. The last time it was restored in 1737 by the famous architect Kilian Dinzenhofer. At the main portal of the building there are beautiful statues and frescoes, the authors of which are Antonin Braun and Peter Azam. The interior of the church is dominated by gilding, in the central hall of the monastery there is an organ with magnificent figures of angels, as well as stained glass windows with images of St. Nicholas and St. Wenceslas.
The main decoration of the church is a huge crystal chandelier, once presented by the Russian Tsar Nicholas II. It was made on the famous Garrach glass manufactory and made in the form of the imperial crown. On Orthodox Easter and Christmas, a procession takes place around the church. Every year thousands of tourists and pilgrims gather here to admire the magnificent Baroque building, as well as take part in divine services.
