St. John's Chapel. Crosses

Prague Castle, right of the Second Entrance

Description:

The chapel is located in the second courtyard of Prague Castle. It was attached to the presidential palace in the XVIII century. The construction was carried out from 1758 to 1763 during the so-called Teresian reconstruction by the architect Pakassi. In the middle of the XIX century, it was rebuilt in the style of classicism, which more corresponded to the spirit of the era.

The chapel is also sometimes called the Treasury. It was here in the period from 1961 to 1990 that the exposition of treasures from the so-called Svetovite treasure was located, which, by the way, numbered more than 400 unique jewelry and textiles.

Today, the building is a laconic, rectangular in plan, a building of 2 floors, topped with a pointed roof. The sides of the chapel are rounded. On the sides, at the level of the second floor, there are several deep niches, each of which exhibits figures of Czech saints. Each niche is equipped with a large metal plate with a representation of its “inhabitant”.
