Emmaus monastery

Czech Republic, Prague, Na Slovanech

Description:

Emmaus Monastery is located in Prague, in the district of Prague 2. It is also called a monastery in Slovenia, which reflects its exact location. In the XVIII century, two towers and a new Baroque facade were built to the old Gothic monastery building.

The monastery was founded in 1347 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV as a male monastery of the Benedictine Order. Since the emperor, who came from the maternal line of the ancient West Slavic family, sought to unite the Western and Eastern branches of Christianity, services in this Catholic monastery were conducted in Church Slavonic.

In 1942, the monks were evicted from the monastery, and a German military hospital was organized in the monastery. In February 1945, the buildings of the monastery were badly damaged as a result of Allied bombing. After the war, the monastery was restored, but the subsequent nationalization forced some monks to leave for Italy, and some to find refuge in other monasteries in the Czech Republic. The territory of the monastery was transferred to the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The monastery has now been returned to the Catholic Church. In 2003, a new altar was consecrated in the church of the monastery, designed by the famous sculptor Karel Stadnik.
