Leopold Fountain
Hradč any, Prague 1, Czech Republic
Description:
The Leopold Fountain, also known as the Lion Fountain, is one of the most important architectural monuments in Prague. It is located between the Prague Palace, the theatre and the Silver Chapel. The fountain was built in the XVII century to perpetuate the memory of Prince Tyrol Archduke Leopold the Fifth.
At the top of the fountain, we see a statue of the prince sitting on a dashing horse, and complement this artistic ensemble of figures of the deities of the sea, located slightly lower, at the base of the fountain. Before them, by the way, there was a difficult task to depict deities living under water, without offending the feelings of the target audience of that Puritan time, because, as you know, under the water trousers and pleated dresses are unnecessary. However, a solution has been found - mythical sea creatures chastely cover nudity with wide fins. Until the beginning of the XX century, the fountain was used as a water reservoir in case of extinguishing fires.
