Charles University
Description:
The famous Charles University, the first university of the Czech Republic and Central Europe, is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was founded in 1347 by order of King Charles IV. Initially, it had four faculties - theology, law, medicine, art.
The university is inextricably linked to the political and religious development of the Czech Republic. Here Jan Hus (the then rector of the university) demanded a church reformation. The uprisings of 1618 and 1848 were raised by the intellectuals of the university. In recent history, university students protested against the fascist regime in 1939 and 1948. The Velvet Revolution, which ended the socialist regime in the Czech Republic in 1989, also began with university protests.
Today, more than 42 thousand students from 48 countries of the world study at the university. The University is a member of the Association of European Universities along with Oxford, Bonn, Sorbonne, Bologna and the University of Geneva. The university has 17 faculties. The most popular among applicants are philosophical, legal and social faculties.
