Karlov Street
Karlova, 110 00 Praha, Czech Republic
Description:
Charles Street is one of the most beautiful streets in Prague. This is the most winding street in town. Charles Street was named after Charles IV, but it wasn’t until 1848. Before that, it was called Jesuit for a long time, and even earlier it bore the names of crafts, whose representatives lived on this street. Charles Street connects Krzyzhovnicka Square near Charles Bridge with the Small Square in the center of Old Mesta. On this street there are a large number of historical monuments, and some of them have been preserved since the Middle Ages.
With the houses located on this street, there are many legends and interesting stories. For example, according to one such legend, the owner of the house “U Kamenne morske panny”, or “At the Stone Maiden”, kept a mermaid in a barrel and showed it for money. However, soon after a young man fell in love with a mermaid, it turned out that it was a fraud and she was an ordinary girl. The guy took it with him, and the name of the house has survived from that time to this day.
